The Functions of the Urinary System
The Structure of the Urinary systemThe urinary system consists of two kidneys, each kidney consists of three distinct regions; the renal cortex, the outer region, the renal medulla, and the renal columns. Within each kidney are the structural units known as nephrons, these structures are responsible for forming urine.
Extending from the kidneys are the ureters, the ureters delivers waste fluid or urine, which is stored in the calyces prior to transport, to the bladder. The bladder is a smooth, collapsible, muscular sac that stores urine temporarily until it is time to rid the fluid waste. The urine is kept from seeping out of the bladder using the internal urethral sphincter. This sphincter is located between the bladder and Urethra. When this muscle relaxes the urine flows out of the bladder through the urethra and out of the body. |
